As you have probably noticed just by my name, there have been many changes in the Spur since the last issue. From the first weapon being drawn at the Great Pillaging to the discovery of Flita's past, the FSSC has been there consistently to bring you the news that YOU want to hear. That is what makes my announcement so hard: effective after the completion of the third issue of the fifth volume, I will no longer be the editor of the Spurian Chronicle. Seeing as you are reading this, you can now assume that I am no longer the editor of this fine paper. Let it be known that this was my choice alone; none tried to force me out of the position. I simply felt that it was time someone else took over the paper and that I return to saving the world and writing articles once more. Since I have already said most of my good-byes, let me take a quick moment to thank those that I forgot to mention in my farewell speech: Naghan, for his invaluable writing skills and drive. Without you we would not have had this issue. Lycosa, for taking the job of Assistant Editor when no one else wanted it. Junor, for the things he has done. And that finishes what I have to say in this, my final Letter from the Editor. Be well, friends, and read on - my final issue awaits! --+== Selder'a Firedrake =========================================================================== *FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC* =========================================================================== The Who's Who of Spur By the FSSC Staff Seeing as this is my final issue, I decided to get the FSSC staff writers to reveal to us the nature of two significant Dragons in Spurian History. Though there have been many, they ended up choosing two that I have had the honor to call friends: Baal AkAar and Junor Lemmsjid. Both of them represent the true nature of the Dragons, though each in a different way. Read on and see for yourselves! -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- Baal AkAar: One of Spur's original citizens, Baal AkAar helped to define what it means to be a Hero of Spur. A black Dragon currently at his second stage of life, he has lived through numerous threats including Soros, the Muatana-Al uprising, and the Ice Devil incident. But Baal has done more than live through these events: he helped shape their outcome. Baal was a key force in defeating Soros, defending the city from his armies when they attacked and helping to defeat the traps and perils in his citadel when it was invaded. His blade cut through the necks of more Muatana-Al ferals than any other Spurian, earning him the nickname "The Executioner" in some circles. He assisted in the rescue of Laurana from the Ice Devil's clutches, never regretting the pain and injury it caused him. Baal is, in short, a hero of the highest caliber. But Baal is also a Dragon some consider too strict and ready to react with his sword. Some (mainly those that did not have to deal with the Muatana-Al Bane) consider his mass extermination of the vampire-kin through their decapitation vile and unthinkable. [Editor's Note: Removing a Muatana- Al's head causes it to suffer permanent death, as does dying in sunlight] As well, the black Dragon has been known to swiftly kill any that insulted his race or pick his pocket. This has caused occasional problems with those that believe that pickpocketing should not be a capitol offense and those that think all Spurians have free speech. Those that believe such things , however, are in the minority. Most know the skilled Dragon only decapitated those that attacked others without remorse on a daily basis. As well, Baal has always warned those around him about how he deals with pickpockets, and has always told those that insulted him what would occur if they continued. He is kind to Secians and would run himself through rather than hurt one. He has been known to make jokes about himself, often pointing out to others that he is the shortest Dragon in Spur. Baal is considered a dear friend to many notable Spurians, including Selder'a the Dragon and Laurana the Healer. In short, Baal is the definition of nobility; his spirit is truly Dragon. Favored Items: A two-handed red steel bastard-sword and a black glass bastard sword. Group Affiliations: The Dragon Council. Notable Deeds: Has defended the Spur from Soros, the Ice Devil, feral Muatana-Als, and other threats too numerous to mention; is the co-founder of the Governor's Games; has decapitated more Muatana-Als than any other Spurian in history. Current Location: Baal is currently wandering the world; he may not be seen in the Spur for decades to come. -+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+-+- Junor Lemmsjid: A Golden Second Stage Dragon, is short in stature but great in intelligence. Arriving in the Spur several years ago, Junor lent his mighty sinews and even mightier intellect to such famed quests as the Warpstone Affair, the Rift Quest, the Yolldin Quest, the Mackal Quest, and others. During his tumultous youth Junor was known for his quick anger and impetuous nature. Finding power in the realm of darkness, Junor was the first Dragon to, through meddling with the powers of Chaos, completely turn from the Draconic Ways of Entropy to the uncertain path of the Chaotic Alignment. Six Spurian years ago Junor bonded with Trenal the Secian and ascended to the Second Stage. It is rumored that his Change tore him, painfully, back to Entropy, leaving indelible marks upon his psyche. Since his Change, Junor has been slow to anger, extremely conservative, and somewhat flippant in the face of solemnity. When in battle and extremity, however, Junor's old self appears and he takes as many risks as the most hot-blooded young Leuian. When not defending the Spur, Junor has been known to frequent the Yelican Caves and the cavern of the Carnivorous Spiders, his glowing drathain great-axe cutting a swath through the ranks of his enemies. As he ages, however, Junor has been seen hunting less and less. Junor has always professed himself as a warrior before a Rune Mage, but of late he has been seen invoking runespells rather than swinging his weapon, perhaps in anticipation of a time where weapons will be useless and magick paramount. Favored Item: A glowing turquoise drathain great-axe. Group Affiliations: Keeper of the Dragon Council keys, member of the Order of the Crystal Star (now defunct), member of the Save the Spur Society, member of the Spurian Mercenaries Guild (now defunct). Notable Deeds: Defended the Spur from countless enemies, from cicadas to Dark Terrors to crystalline gargoyles. Repositor of several unique magickal artifacts, from the Green Broadsword of Wishes to the Lightning Globe. The foremost authority on and most consistent winner of the Drag the Elder Games. Current Location: About the Spur, foraying to Meetpoint once in a while to look for cheap deals. =========================================================================== *FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC* =========================================================================== The Temple Burnings Through a Flerian's Eyes By Naghan Tirel Dragons are contrary creatures, and they make for especially insufferable Editors. I should have realized, the very moment that I qualified my resume with "I dislike blood and all forms of violence" that my most esteemed Editor would see fit to saddle me with each and every article of m ayhem that he could dream up in his wily draconian brain. I begin to wonder, in fact, if the latest episodes of destruction that have taken our once- peaceful Spur into the very depths of the Dark Realm were manufactured for the sole benefit of my viewing. My recent work, "Independent Singularity", deals with the idea of the self as whole and all others as constructs created by the self to tribulate the soul, and I suggest that you peruse it if you are feeling especially paranoid. There is, after all, no greater adversary than one's own self. That having been said, this latest, third installation in the Soporific Series diverges from the genre by failing to deal with an institution of the Spur (i.e. the Governors' Games and the Drag the Elder Games); rather, this is an article wrestling with the ideas behind the burning of the Temple of Set and the attacks upon the Temples of Unknown and Elindale. I invite you, the loyal reader, to follow me, mind open, as I analyze the thoughts, feelings, and needs behind the infamous Temple Burnings. It is worthy to note that, four Spurian weeks before the burning of Set, Selder Firemix, the oldest Dragon currently dwelling in the Spur, ascended from the Second Stage to the Third. Selder'a (as he is now known, the "'a" being an ancient Dragon honorific) is but the second Dragon known to have completed this most important of Changes (Thumper'a being the first), so little is known about the psychological (not to mention physiological) changes that accompany this most painful of events. One can assume, however, by viewing the results of the First Changes undergone by many Dragons, that Selder'a's mind was both expanded and warped by his Change. Moreover, his Change was undergone without the Secian Bond. It is rumored, in fact, that Selder'a's Bondmate was none other than the Arachnian Lycosa, and that the unconventional Dragon was able to somehow manipulate the Arachnian's heritage to form a pseudo-bond.. If the rumor is true, then Selder'a's mind underwent a Change greater than that of his body; a Change opening him to new possibilities that may, before, have been unclear. Several days after his Change, Selder'a announced that he, allied with the forces of Taath, would burn three Spurian Temples, beginning with the Temple of Set, which was to be razed on the first of the Second Month. The High Priest of Taath, Dolomedes Triton, did not deny that he was allied with Selder'a (and, as it turned out, he was). It is difficult to discern the High Priest's motive: Dolomedes, as an Arachnian, comes as close to being unknowable as one can imagine (I do not pretend to understand the twisted workings of the Arachnian mind --Chaos is their desmene, and the aching, violent yearning of beings stripped of Magick simply cannot be comprehended or empathized with). Dolomedes' professed motive, however, was simple: he wished to slay people and commit other, similar, violent acts. The bitter irony of the Taathian-Dragon Alliance --Taath's temple had been burned many times by Dragonkind-- was not lost on some. Relion Lem, a fervent follower of Set, preached loudly and long-windedly against the Alliance and its purpose, but his efforts availed neither him or his God: the plans to attack the Temple of Set continued. As the First of the Second Month approached, tension mounted. Many barbed words were exchanged within the confines of the Town Square, and much strife ensued when various Secians, including Filo (a Settian), Flita, and Rollii, vowed to defend Set against the Dragons. Many Dragons, most notably Razil, broke openly with Selder'a and washed their hands of the entire event, often citing their reason as the detrimental effect temple burnings tend to have on Dragon-Secian relations. The Set burners, however, were largely unmoved by such strife; some observers noted that they (those who were not in on the burning for recreational purposes) seemed possessed of an almost reforming spirit. This "reforming spirit" shall be discussed later. Having performed a multitude of interviews and having read diverse second-hand accounts, I am able to put some credence to the rumor that, even before the Burning, there were parties engaged in conscious efforts to drive a wedge between Seciankind and Dragonkind. Most sources point to Relion Lem as the perpetrator of this: he was often known to trumpet forth his theory that the Dragons had long ago decided to ignore Seciankind and leave all Secians to their fates. One source, however, contradicts the notion that this idea was entirely Relion's: at one point before the attack, Relion was seen introducing his "friend", a Frontacian named Sinistrah, to various Secians (some of whom would later be seen defending the temples against the Dragons). Because the name "Sinistrah" has since become a prominent in the Spur, it is interesting to note that this is the first instance of him being sighted in the confines of the city (since his departure many months ago). The First of the Second Month came along and the Burning of Set was at hand. The defenders, pitifully few in number, assembled at their temple while Selder'a called the attackers to the Bank of the Spur. I, meanwhile, viewed the event through a crystal scrying ball (courtesy of the FSSC Main Office). The attackers were: Karak the Anthian, Scatman the Human, Lycosa the Arachnian, Selder'a the Dragon, uhm the Arachnian, Smogg the Dragon, Mojo the Dragon, Gristle the Thugian, Dolomedes the Arachnian, and Drek the Monitanian. [Editor's note: Mojo was originally a spectator, but after being killed by the defenders decided to join the Army of the Dragon.] At this point, Selder'a told the force to "Remember, there MAY BE spectators.. do not kill everyone. In fact, I would prefer no killing at all." This statement can be read in two ways: first, it may have been a cynical attempt to create a false moral ground for the attacking party to stand on; second, it may have been a true, honest statement in accordance with the strange "reforming" mood possessed by the serious attackers. Many critics of the attack would be happy enough in their belief that the former reading is the correct one. I, however, am not satisfied with initial readings: as a reporter and historian, I seek to dig deeper, and I am, I own, intrigued by the possibilities of the second reading. Most likely the statement was a mixture of both readings (all things being equal), and I shall explore it as such. On, however, with the attack. The attacking party proceeded down Temple Way, not knowing the extent of the defense (though, in most opinions, it would take a mighty host indeed to defeat this particular set of attackers). First contact came just outside Set's Portal when Nite the Psycian leaped from the shadows and cried, "The Water In The River Runs Warm!!" Surprised that Nite was a believer in existentialism, the attackers paused briefly enough for Rollii the Secian to jump from the shadows and begin casting a runespell. Selder'a, having finally revised his opinion of Nite's character, managed to raise an eyebrow before Nite's Psycian powers confused his mind. Sarik the Anthian and Filo the Secian completed the ambush by jumping from behind an overturned fruit cart and laying upon the attackers with runes and weapons. "T'would seem we are being attacked," Selder'a brilliantly informed posterity. The ambushers were driven off, for the most part, and the attackers entered Set's temple. The battle continued bloodily, and I am not interested in describing the particulars. Some images stay with me: Vay the Dragon attacking Smogg the Dragon from hiding; Sarik and Karak, both Anthians, battling in the eaves; vipers, minions of Set, defending Set's altar; Selder'a's Dragon fire smashing into the altar; Relion the San Elf appearing and calling upon Set, to no avail; the altar of Set burning, incandescent --yes, stone can burn, I have seen it, seen it with my own eyes; smoke rising from the collapsing temple; the weeping of the dead; the lusterless eyes of a slain Secian. The efforts of the defenders bore no fruit. Set was burned as no temple has been burned before. Even the attackers were slightly dazed. Their boasting was vigorous and loud, but it rang false in my ears. I could see that they, save the Dragon who led them, still did not know exactly why they had carried out the burning. Certainly it was a rollicking battle for those insensitive to nuance, but it was also a horrible, catastrophic event, the memory of which still leaves me with tearing, fragmented images of horror. Would that I could somehow exorcise these images! The followers of Set walk about the Spur, alive, but their faces are drawn and their eyes are dim: long will it be before they recover. Selder'a, after the attack, announced that the Temple of Unknown would be burned two days hence. Many Leuians follow Unknown, and the Leuian Pride (who had been standing by laughing smugly during the burning of Set) vowed to defend the Faceless One to the death. On the appointed day, two vast hosts gathered: the original attackers faced the original defenders of Set, plus Elendron, Brigham, Zara'Sheen (all three members of the Pride), and Aristobulous the Psycian. As well, after the events of the last temple assault, there was but one spectator: Vega the Dragon. The blood shed during this attack turned the walls of the Temple crimson, and the defenders, though they slew several attackers, died in multitudes. The lone spectator, Vega, was also butchered a number of times by the defenders, even though she had told them of her position and helped them prepare beforehand. One should point out, however, that no one lost anything in dying - Lysandra the Secian resurrected all who fell. There is a vague, unconfirmed rumor that Selder'a paid Lysandra to resurrect every dead Spurian, even the fallen foes.. but only Lysandra and Selder'a know for certain if this is true. Several unexplained factors led to the ultimate survival of Unknown's Temple, including temporal problems that have always plagued the Spur during great battles (it is my learned opinion, as put forth in my book "Overload", that great concentrations of magickal power, such as those found during battles, cause the Warpstone to, in an act of magickal self-defense, freeze the battle scene). Some say that Unknown appeared on the battlefield, in the shape of a tiger, and put a stop to the fighting. It will be several years before historians have finished the colossal task of sifting through written accounts and reach a consensus as to what actually happened. The attack upon Set left many with a sense of sorrow. The attack upon Unknown, or rather the defense, left many with a feeling of distaste. Long have the acts of disarming precious weapons and casting Sleep Dart upon folk, with the intent of stripping items from their bodies, been considered base and dis- honorable. The distinction between "Thief" and "Feral", while always entirely objective and given to unfair interpretation, has usually rested on the stealing of items --once a "Thief" begins disarming and sleep-searching, he is thereafter known as a "Feral". The Leuian Pride has a long history of battling Thieves and, especially, Ferals. My knowledge of this history led me to believe that the defense of Unknown would be honorable, even glorious. A fitting tribute to the Unknown God. I was shocked and bewildered to find that the opposite was true: Zara'Sheen the Leuian and Brigham the Leuian, both members of the Pride, participated in the act of sleep-searching. Some of the attackers, against the orders of Selder'a and the High Priest of Taath, responded in kind, and the situation degenerated into a rather ignoble thieving match. Both sides, in the end, claimed victory. Selder'a then announced that the Temple of Elindale would be burned a day later. This Temple --held in high regard by many Spurians-- was able to muster a defensive force larger than the forces of either of the previous places of worship. The defenders were Aristobulous, Elendron, Eblis, Geraldd, Flita, Kastar, Zara'Sheen, Tan'Fang, and Brigham. Lysandra the Secian, who had healed both attacker and defender during the first two temple attacks, found herself caught between her bond to Dragon- kind and her love of Elindale. The aforementioned Frontacian Sinistrah capitalized on this ambivalence (or, depending on who you ask, took pity on her) and offered her a black actar amulet that would, ostensibly, protect Elindale from harm. This amulet was to be powered by Lysandra's own energy and was to be employed during the attack. To preserve the focus of this article I shall be brief concerning the events regarding Sinistrah and Lysandra (they have not yet played themselves out, so we have no historical perspective with which to view them). However, it is necessary to my article that I inform you that Lysandra employed this amulet, which peacebonded Elindale, halted the attack, and teleported her to Sinistrah's tower. Lysandra's screams drew both attackers and defenders, who had forgotten their differences, to a black pit leading to Sinistrah's tower. There they laid upon Sinistrah with weapons and spells and destroyed Sinistrah's Orb of Entropy (which had been his power focus). Lysandra was found in a dungeon beneath the tower and was freed. Lysandra's bond to Elindale was severed. Sinistrah claimed that Lysandra's troubles were an accident, while others claim that Sinistrah wishes to bond Lysandra to him so that he may possess her soul. Either interpretation of the above actions is, at this point, valid. There were, as the reader now realizes, many ramifications of the Temple Burnings, results that belie the popular opinion that the Dragons undertook the burnings because they were "bored." It is now that I return to my earlier mention of a "reforming spirit" possessing the temple burners (once again, excepting those who burned for recreational purposes). Selder'a, when asked to provide a coherent reason for the burnings, almost invariably replied that they were undertaken to restore "the balance." It is worthy, especially in light of the fact that, by all accounts, Selder'a orchestrated the burnings, to examine in context the notion of the burnings as "balancing" tools. The Spur, prior to the burnings, was a place of complacency where the biggest news in the previous two FSSC articles was a battle over the ownership of a black silk tunic. Complacency breeds softness, and several facts point to the idea that organizations possessing once-strict rules intended to preserve their members' edge were becoming lax and politically impotent. The Pride, for instance, had just elected a Thief to the position of Clawmaster, a bare-faced rejection of the previous Pride indictment of Leuian Thieves. Had there been an active Thieves Guild in the Spur, the Pride would not have elected this Thief: they would have seen him as a possible infiltrator and rejected him on the spot. As things stood, however, the Pride, by allowing a Thief into its membership, ceased to be the Spur's greatest anti-thievery organization and became an all-encompassing body of immense inertia with no clear political goal beyond argumentative monthly meetings. The fall of the Pride was but one of many changes noticed by the perceptive inhabitants of the Spur. The gradual downslide of the various Spurian organizations was reaching intolerable levels: action was required. So it was that Selder'a decided to burn three Spurian temples. The three temples chosen support the "balancing" claim. The Temple of Set, as the focus of the Spurian Thieves, and the Temple of Unknown, as the (current) focus of Spurian thief-killers, have always been at odds with one- another, the former claiming honor in dishonor (i.e. robbing from the rich and giving to the poor) and the latter claiming to be the repository of Spurian honor and its definition. It is worthy to note, then, that the defense of Set was an honorable one: the two sides, Settians against Dragons and Taathians, battled toe-to-toe and the defenders, though vanquished, did not resort to any thieving what-so-ever. The defense of Unknown, in stark contrast, was dishonorable: there were sleep-searchings and disarmings galore. Had the defenders of Set carried out the activities performed by the defenders of Unknown, they would have been condemned as the dishonorable curs the Pride had "always known them to be". The attacks upon Set and Unknown exposed a fundamental hypocrisy underlying all dealings within the Spur: the Thieves of Set, it turns out, are honorable, and the Pride is not. Moreover, the aforementioned Thief of the Pride was not the one who carried out the dishonorable actions; had he done so, the actions would have been understandable. Instead, non-Thief members of the Pride became the Thieves of Unknown. The Temple strife also exposed weaknesses within the mysterious Dragon Council. Members were seen attacking one-another both verbally and physically. One wonders whether the Council, always regarded as the most powerful organization in the Spur, is instead one of the weakest and most fragmented. I have not yet mentioned Elindale, and my failure was intentional. Elindale was the culmination of the burnings, and, as a result, the events unleashed during the attack upon Elindale have the most far-reaching consequences. Sinistrah the Frontacian, whether or not he intended harm upon Lysandra the Secian, has professed a wish to rule the Spur. While he claims that he will rule the Spur only if the Spur accepts him as one, it is not inconceivable that he may be A) Lying, or B) Prepared to inspire rebellion within the ranks of the Spurian townspeople. Regardless of Sinistrah's true intentions, the burning of Elindale forced him into the open and, as a result, Spurians may prepare for his ambitions rather than be caught unawares. The loyal reader, if the desired effect of the Soporific Series did not catch him after the first few paragraphs, now realizes that, had the attacks upon Set, Unknown, and Elindale not taken place, we would not be aware of the fundamental weaknesses in the Leuian Pride, the Dragon Council, the Clerics of the Spur and, most importantly, the threat posed by Sinistrah the Frontacian and other (rumored) elements. I hope that I have clarified this situation somewhat. =========================================================================== *FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC* =========================================================================== Interview With the Peddler Interviewed by Lycosa Rabida Translated and written by Quido and Nunzio the Guardians It was my privilege to sit down and talk with Mulciber recently about his past and some of the many services he provides to the citizens of Spur. Without further ado, here is my conversation with Mulciber Stonehands. Lycosa bows to Mulciber. Mulciber bows. The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says Let's start with your origins, where did you come from before you came to Spur ?" Mulciber blinked. Apparently this first question caught him off guard. Mulciber says, "Hmm I forget, I seem to recall always being here. Let me have the next question." The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says How long have you been a Master Artificer ?" Mulciber says, "Ahh well, I attained the rank of Master fairly recently, that was about, um, four hundred years ago." The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says Was it hard for you to establish a business and reputation here in Spur ?" Mulciber says, "Ah yes, very, for the first 300 years I was unable to work in front of the counter. I merely accepted requests and then passed them back to the guild, very difficult in that manner to establish a reputation." The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says Did you have to pass your master's test before you were allowed to do the work yourself ?" Mulciber says, "Well it's not really a test, you must create a Masterwork." The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says And what was your Masterwork ?" Mulciber says, "It was a Bearded Axe, in crystalla." The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says Crystalla, a rare material and, I assume, very hard to work ?" Mulciber says, "Yes, but it's not the difficulty of the work that makes it a masterwork. It's difficult to say exactly when you'll make a Masterwork. It's more that on occasion you are inspired." Mulciber shrugged. The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says Ok, let me ask you some questions to help the newer citizens of Spur get to know you better." Mulciber grinned at me then. Apparently he thinks everyone know about him at birth. Mulciber says, "sure" The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says I'm going to list some services that I know you provide, since I've used all of them myself. If you could, give me the average cost for each as I go along." The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says Weapon and Armor repair ?" Mulciber says, "Two levels if the item has not reached the Damaged state, it is 5K if it is Damaged then 10K. When an item is damaged it can no longer be Readied and it will say "damaged bastard sword, for example." The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says Balancing of weapons for improved accuracy ?" Mulciber says, "Ok this is tough, it depends upon the weapon. If you get a saber off a rogue and bring it to me, I could help you for as little as 25K. On the other hand, some weapons can't be improved for any amount of money. I've charged as much as 1.5 million for just a balancing." The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says Sharpening or weighting of weapons for deeper cuts or better crushing ?" Mulciber says, "Same pricing applies." The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says Strengthening and weight reduction of armor ?" Mulciber says, "Hmm that's more difficult. I'd say it's basically the same structure but lets see, to take a few pounds off a set of quartz mail is relatively easy and only about 25K. But if it's already been done once (most of what I sell is already reduced) it goes up to 100K." The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says Any other services that I missed, other that Familiar Collars which I covered in my other article ?" Mulciber says, "Well I'm still offering charged Trans items, 20 charges and it's rechargeable. I was asking 250K for it but had no takers. I hate to lower it too much their really hard to make, but I'm open to negotiation. Oh One more thing! Both Fam collars and the Trans amulet are available immediately." The ancient guardian says, "Master Lycosa says Well then, I thank you for you time, and may your forge always stay hot and your hammer strike true." And so ends my interview with Mulciber. When next I see him, it will be for the same reason as everyone else. Getting =========================================================================== *FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC* =========================================================================== The Pride by Naghan Tirel The actions of the Leuian Pride have become questionable of late. These actions became overt when Elendron Mantricker, a Thief, was elected (with Brigham) to the position of Clawmaster of the Pride. For those of you who remember, the Pride has always been an organization famed for its intolerance towards thieving and any even remotely connected with the Thieves Guild or Set. Not trusting my own opinion, I decided to get "down and dirty" and interview two typical Spurians and extract from them their opinions on the current status of the Leuian Pride. _______________ Myself: Perhaps you could furnish a quote on your opinion of the Pride's current status? Kyra: "I've been away from the lands too long. The Pride was not extant when I was last here." Myself: And you, Anak? This can be off the record. Or anonymous. Anak: "I know the Pride reformed recently... but I have not seen any sign of the new Pride. Are they doing anything? I guess they have restructuring to do" Myself: That is an opinion, I suppose. That they are impotent...Yes... "Anak the Secian says that the Pride is full of impotent Leuians." Perhaps that shall be my headline. Anak: "that not a good idea..." Myself: Catchy enough? Anak: "well, i not want to make the Khats mad, calling them impotent" Myself: Anak the Secian told me that the Pride is full of impotent Leuians and that the Pride itself is a bad idea. Great headline. Anak: "maybe I do a report on the questionable reporting style of DFC reporters!" Myself: Pardon me for speaking as I write. Old habit. Anak the Secian told me that the Pride is full of impotent Leuians and that the Pride itself is a bad idea, but became angry when I confronted him with my disagreement. Anak shrieks. Anak: "what happen to objectivity?" Myself: Oh, yes, I am entirely objective. Anak: "plbt!" Kyra: "Objective, or objectionable?" Anak: "and you can quote me on THAT one" Myself: I object to your slur upon my reporting ethics, for instance. Anak: "well, i object to you twisting my words!" Myself: "Anak the Secian says "plbt!" to the Pride." Or, "Anak conspires with Kyra the Leuian against the Pride." Kyra: "Hmm, how much do you say young humans like wigs?" Myself: Did you know, my Spurian cross-section, that the Pride has a Thief as a Clawmaster? Anak: "oh? an active thief?" Myself: Very much so. Anak: "Elendron?" Myself: Yes. Anak: "hm." Kyra: "ahh, not who I thought." Anak: "well, so long as TanFang still the head... is he?" Anak: "there conspiring going on?" Myself: There is a schizophrenia in the Pride. How could there not be when a Thief is prominent in an institution that once prided (no pun intended) itself in its Kill Leuian Thieves on Sight policy? Anak: "hm." _______________ As you can see from the excerpt, the general population of the Spur is skeptical of the Pride and its actions. They are, however, fearful of speaking out. You will notice, reader, that I had to resort to rather extreme reporting tactics to wrest even the slightest opinion from these two Spurians. When the opinion came, it was one of confusion. I return you to the Spur of a month ago. The Leuian Pride had met for the second time to decide on its Khatyr and Clawmaster(s). TanFang was chosen, once again, as Khatyr; Elendron and Brigham became Clawmasters of the Pride. Selwin Stormtalon, with Denin one of the two oldest Pride members at the meeting, was asked about what occurred. When the subject of Elendron came up, Selwin was asked what profession Elendron was: "He is a Rune Mage," Selwin replied. When informed that Elendron was a Thief, Selwin became skeptical. As a result, we offered to him these facts: Elendron uses the spells of Chameleon Web and Sleep Dart often. Both are the most useful spells available to Thieves. Elendron has not been seen to use any spells not available to Thieves, and it is inconceivable, from the standpoint of his official biographer, that he would hide spells simply to confuse folk. Finally, Elendron, according to several very reliable sources, is a high-ranking member of the Thieves Guild (as published within the FSSC, in fact!), [Editor's note: See? We don't just write the news, we make it] and his rank is going up! Convinced of these things, Selwin became forlorn and opined that the world was coming to an end. It is well known that Elendron's power in the Pride stems from his control of the younger Leuians. Such is obviously the case, for when Zara' Sheen, one of his closest supporters, was informed that he was a Thief, she became extremely defensive, repeatedly asking, "Have you SEEN him steal?" Of course no one has, but Zara'Sheen's interviewer cited the fact that Elendron slew Vega the Dragon in defense of Zaemon the Psycian, a known pickpocket. This incident brings into doubt Elendron's loyalty towards the Pride, for it was apparent to those who witnessed the incident that Elendron and Zaemon planned the attack upon Vega. Zara'Sheen became increasingly distraught, waxing philosophical on what, exactly, defines a "Thief". It was apparent to her interviewer that she was fishing for ways to convince herself of her correctness rather than dictating to the interviewer from a strong moral position. Other members of the Pride have been interviewed, and, while none were unaware of Elendron's profession, all came up with unfounded excuses or cynical admissions that "Yes, the Pride has gone downhill." Whether or not it was correct for the Pride to admit a Thief, it is certainly correct that the passion has been drained from this formerly passionate group. Recently, two members of the Pride were seen, in the midst of previously honorable battle, disarming and searching their foes. When reminded of this, members of the Pride invariably replied that it was "a thing of the past". Apparently the dishonor of the Pride is being swept under the carpet. Where, you may ask, stands the Khatyr in the midst of this combustion? Tan'Fang informed the FSSC that he may take action. Like a compost pile, the Pride of today has the ability to burn, but it is a lazy, slow sort of fire; fire sparked by inconsequential things such as black silk tunics and Dragons attacking innocent pickpockets. This inertia is in contrast to the conflagrations of before: the mighty battles between the Pride and the Thieves Guild. Selwin Stormtalon figured in those mighty conflicts. The FSSC urges him to remind his compatriots of their Leuian duty: Death before dishonor. =========================================================================== *FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC* =========================================================================== Hearthstone Songs Composed by the Bardic Society of Spur Compiled for the FSSC by Lycosa Once again, we at the FSSC, bring to you a little culture with this issue's installment of the Bardic Recital winners. -- Lycosa Recital of Jan 18 1996, the 7th day of the 5th month in the year 101. No prepared entries. "Untitled" by Ragarn Lazlo ** Winner of Spur of the Moment ** Eight eyes and legs, a bringer of death. Immune to my spells, able to break my defense. They roam through the Spur, doing as they will. None stand against them without experiencing a chill. For their prowess in battle is beyond all compare. And their viciousness causes me to stop and stare. But for all their prowess, the magick they touch not. Unable to muster even a drop. Now who is the luckier, them or I? For the power of magick sends my soul high While their soul seeks to bottomless depths, as they live hatred and envy with each and every breath. And this shall hunt them till the end of their days, the beauty of magick denied them through all the Age. Recital of Jan 25 1996, the 21st day of the 5th month in the year 101. "Hope" by Ragarn Lazlo ** Winner of prepared entries ** In wars long past, a hatred born, as innocents caught are tortured and burned. Genocide practiced with Magicks unleashed, Turns any being into an evil beast. The war is over, but hatred lives on, between two races, until both are gone. The opposite sides of the same coin, in eternal bloodshed they both are joined. Perhaps one day the hatred shall end, then peace and love could exist again. For how can love come from a hating beast? When the one we love most is the one we hate least. We must come together for the healing to start, but first we must each look into our own heart. For peace and brotherhood shall never truly come, until we realize that this war can never truly be won. Bardic recital of Feb 01, the 4th day of the 6th month in the year 101. The Spur of the Moment, topic: The Dragon and Taathian attack on the Temple of Set "My Quest(ion)" by Ragarn Lazlo ** Winner of prepared entries ** Tis the love of my life, the reason I exist, my purpose, my being, the greatest of gifts. I search for it always, yet never can find, the strength and wisdom which knowledge defines. Why are we here? What does it mean? What is the answer to these questions I dream? In my search, alas, I am often led astray, as both Fools and Kings seem to get in my way. For Kings know no more than the fools they despise, they simply fool others into thinking them wise. In this pursuit of knowledge, there can be no distractions, The search for true wisdom can be the only course of action. Thus the ruler who leads his kingdom each day often knows only what other fools have to say. Therefore, in my own search I leave all else behind, as I seek ever more knowledge to add to my mind. In my own search I know, there is but one thing defined, that I know nothing at all, though my search last through all time. =========================================================================== *FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC* =========================================================================== The Rise of the Classes by the FSSC Staff Welcome to our third installment of "The Rise of the Classes." This issue, we once more look at polar opposites as we examine the Fighter's Guild and the Runemage's Guild. The Fighter's Guild, always known for its stability, remains that way with little disturbance in the ranks since our first issue. No new fighters entered the top 30, but Luthor Blackwolf did jump from spot 7 to spot 4, leaving Lysa, Tan'Fang, and Brostin in the dust. As well, the current Shieldmaster, Lycosa, has increased his rank by over 145 points since the last issue! Could this be due to his new-found psionic powers, or is it simply because he supplied us with this copy of the list? Only the Fighters know. 1: Lycosa Rabida the Arachnian Rank 700 2: Lug Dug the Thugian Rank 515 3: Claudius Liberator the Muatana-al Rank 440 4: Luthor Blackwolf the Hithual Rank 430 5: Lysa SlinkmeowThend the Leuian Rank 425 6: TanFang Sool the Leuian Rank 380 7: Brostin Newbury the Hithual Rank 370 8: Gencon Demoguy the Human Rank 340 9: Faedriel Lightshadow the Thugian Rank 325 10: Gash Stondterrer the Monitanian Rank 315 11: Winterslope Summerside the Thugian Rank 310 12: Saetine Gradium the Hithual Rank 270 13: Selwin Stormtalon the Leuian Rank 250 14: Donathan LaForce the Psycian Rank 245 15: Alturus Rigell the Hithual Rank 245 16: Pittt steeljaw the Monitanian Rank 245 17: CRUSH THEMALL the Thugian Rank 240 18: Azark Demarest the Leuian Rank 225 19: VonBiere ofNeere the Human Rank 220 20: Krendaan Swathmore the Fir Elf Rank 215 21: Klingon Kia the Hithual Rank 185 22: SeVenger DeSinistre the Monitanian Rank 185 23: Aristarchus Tycho the Oog-ra Rank 180 24: Saltine Kracker the Flerian Rank 180 25: Lucia DeTalonart the Leuian Rank 165 26: Marakos Saadya the Muatana-al Rank 165 27: Aideen Talonheart the Psycian Rank 160 28: Sera Tonin the Hithual Rank 155 29: Hetropoda Venatoria the Arachnian Rank 155 30: Chevron Azulejos the Drag-al Rank 145 ..and dishonorable mention goes to.. 91: Chaseafter Meee the Go-blin Rank 45 ..for having one of the most obvious and annoying names we have ever seen. The Runemage's Guild, always active, sees Cassandra Lightpaw enter the top ten at the #9 spot, going up two spots from last issue. But gaining fast on her heels, Andrella and Tiberiuss (both Psycians) enter the top 30 in spots 13 and 15 respectively. Anak also makes his first appearance in the top 30 at the respectable 24th spot, showing us that not all Secians need Dragons to protect them. 1: Lucianar Lintharnas the Frontacian Rank 280 2: TTorid Whim the Psycian Rank 255 3: Kalas Wolfbane the Anthian Rank 230 4: Sorka Vycor the Frontacian Rank 220 5: Smash Oakbreaker the Thugian Rank 215 6: Mordor Blackbane the Frontacian Rank 200 7: Bilger Chimaera the Psycian Rank 195 8: Cloud Reaver the Anthian Rank 190 9: Cassandra Lightpaw the Leuian Rank 180 10: Aristobulous Runeseeker the Psycian Rank 170 11: Yurochka Zelik the Penthanian Rank 165 12: Argent Balefire the Frontacian Rank 160 13: Andrella Percell the Psycian Rank 160 14: Talbor Nynejex the Leuian Rank 155 15: Tiberiuss Sonian the Psycian Rank 150 16: Ragarn Lazlo the Frontacian Rank 145 17: Elvira Blackbane the Frontacian Rank 145 18: Centoah Koriz the San Elf Rank 145 19: Fumaris Sapid the Leuian Rank 140 20: Deamon SpearHeart the Frontacian Rank 135 21: Maigra Maelrosa the Psycian Rank 130 22: Maya Oakbreaker the Thugian Rank 135 23: Gutt Zsch the Psycian Rank 130 24: Anak Hope-Kton the Secian Rank 115 25: Drakhar Niador the Psycian Rank 110 26: Itzhak Tzevi the Monitanian Rank 100 27: Sinistrah Maelefactos the Frontacian Rank 130 28: Fayed Eaglesflight the Anthian Rank 125 29: LorO Diamond the Secian Rank 120 30: Miricas Ortrell the Psycian Rank 120 ..and honorable mention goes to.. 58: Karak Elamtoss the Anthian Rank 75 Karak, a veteran hero and long time Spurian, is one of the few in his guild that has preferred learning about his art the old fashioned way: adventuring. If it was up to us, you'd be at the top of your guild. =========================================================================== *FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC* =========================================================================== Crime Reports: A rash of pickpocketings or just poor math? Numerous Spurians have reported finding themselves with almost-empty coin-purses while chatting in the Town Square, but do not remember seeing anyone take the coins. Is it the fault of a spectral pickpocket or poor Spurian schools? The world may never know. The return of the Muatana-Al menace? This month has marked the first in years in which multiple citizens have claimed to have been assaulted by the mostly extinct race of half-vampires. With over 10 different reports of drainings, mesmerizations, and old-fashioned torture having been reported to the FSSC office, rumors fly as to whether or not the almost forgotten race has decided to make its comeback by preying on the innocent citizens of Spur. Whether they have or not, one thing is certain: the sales of garlic and holy items has increased 10 fold. Did she or didn't she? Tiberiuss the Psycian was seen trying to chase down Leaf the Muatana-Al last week, but not for a date. The disgruntled Psycian claims the lovely Leaf picked his pocket, and that he was simply trying to get his money back. The problem, however, is that no one saw Leaf pick Tiberiuss' pocket, so it is his word against hers. What does Leaf have to say in her defense? At the time of this printing, she was not available for comment. Caught in the act! Zaemon the Psycian was caught and killed multiple times this month for his constant pickpocketing of Spurians in the Town Square. Though not very good at his craft, Zaemon was able to anger such notable Spurians as Razil the Dragon, Vega the Dragon, Enauch the Bard, and Tan'Fang the Leuian. Well, that's one way to get noticed! Nite the Psycian was recently brought in for questioning on charges of vandalism after numerous citizens reported him burning signs for hours at various Spurian establishments. Though no charges were formally brought against the Psycian, we are told that the Runemage's Guild may take steps to prevent such actions in the near future, should they continue. At the time of this printing, Nite had no comment on the charges. Kidnapped! During an attack on the temple of Elindale, Lysandra the Secian was kidnapped by the Frontacian Runemage Sinistrah and dragged to his magical tower. Though she was later rescued by the noble heroes of Spur, Sinistrah escaped before he could be brought to justice. Sinistrah is still at large, and considered extremely dangerous. A Spurian uprising? Bands of townsmen as skilled with pikes as elite guardsmen and completely immune to magic have been seen attacking groups of Dragons throughout the city. Though the Dragon forces have survived every assault, the steady increase in the frequency of attacks makes one wonder how long the Dragons' luck will last. Flita a murderer? A San Elf bounty hunter recently came to Spur to extradite Flita to her home town where she is charged with murdering her former husband. Not having the permission of the current ruler of Spur, however, many fights broke out between the bounty hunter and Flita's supporters who believe the charges false. The bounty hunter, Razil, and Uhm all died in these conflicts, Uhm being killed by a weapon and Razil being smote using Taath's prayer. The Dragon Council, the Pride, and the King of Spur have not made any official comments about the incidents. More Leuians gone bad! In what some are calling "The Fall of the Pride", Elendron and Zara'sheen have once more committed questionable acts in the name of honor. Elendron and Zara, both defenders during the temple attacks, hunted down Uhm the Arachnian in the Spurian Arena and proceeded to kill him multiple times. Flita the Secian was forced to restore him to life each time, only to have the pair cut him down again. Finally, an enraged Selder'a entered the arena and dispersed the two Leuians, allowing Uhm to be returned to safety. The cause for the killings is said to have been Uhm's part in the Great Pillaging, though this is not confirmed. Another poisoning! Rand the Dragon, one of the Spur's oldest members, was recently ambushed by the Assassin's Guild and poisoned. Though seriously injured, Rand's life was saved when a Secian stood over his prone form, protecting and healing the Dragon at the same time. The assassins later gave Rand the antidote for the poison when it was discovered he had not been a part of the Great Pillaging. Another Dragon in trouble! Before their partnership in the Great Pillaging, Dolomedes the Arachnian is rumored to have killed Selder the Dragon during his transformation to third stage. The attack, which is said to have occurred at the sage's guild, is rumored to be in retaliation for the Dragon's recent pillaging of the temple of Taath. =========================================================================== *FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC* =========================================================================== Rumors: A new look hit the Town Square this month as the entropy sword of Kralen was built over by artists reportedly hired by the Dragon Council. The new Town Square, though not yet complete, will feature two giant Dragon statues who's wings will touch, creating the borders of a magical portal. When asked to comment, one Dragon said, "This represents the beginning of the New Age of Dragons." So much for sleeping soundly at night! Look out, Spur! Selder Firemix, the editor of the Spurian Chronicle and former King of Spur, successfully completed his transformation to third stage a week after our second issue was printed. Selder's transformation represents the first Dragon in over a century to achieve third stage in our city, and only the third Spurian Dragon in history to ever advance to that level. Though the Dragon is reported to have no bondmate, rumors fly that Selder somehow established a pseudo-bond to Lycosa the Arachnian, allowing a smoother transformation. If this is true, it would also mark another first for the Spur: An Arachnian pretending to be a Secian. Quite a time for firsts, isn't it? Razil, the current Most Eligible Dragon of Spur, seems to have swept yet another young Dragon off her feet! Vega, a young female Dragon of the first stage, has been seen hugging, kissing, and otherwise adventuring with Razil in public of late, breaking the hearts of many young male Dragons. We here at the FSSC would like to congratulate these two; after all, if all Dragons would spend more time like them, perhaps they would find another use for our temples besides fire wood. The King recovers! Smogg the Dragon, hailed by many as the King of Spur, is reported to be successfully recovering from the poison inflicted upon him during a recent riot in the poor quarter. Though the exact details are sketchy, it is rumored that an assassin armed with a dagger coated with poison harmful only to Dragons was able to wound the powerful Dragon, nearly killing him instantly. Quick magical attention, however, was able to save the Dragon's life, meaning that a new King will not have to be crowned. Good luck with your recovery, Smogg! Pride Hall revealed! After the first major meeting of the Pride in years, it was revealed that the Leuian Pride has constructed a home for itself within the walls of our fair city. Though the exact location currently remains a mystery to most, Tan'Fang (the current leader of the Pride) announced that "the doors of the hall will be open to all who need entrance," and that the location was only kept secret so as to keep thieves and other threats out. Hm. Does that mean the location is being kept a secret from Elendron? We'd ask, but claw marks are so hard to cover up... Bet you didn't know: the gem actar, often found in jewelry and weapons, is a magical material that represents the essence of cold. Actar naturally comes in blue and white, with black being occasionally found in a few rare (and very odd) cases. Actar can be mined in the far north beyond the Great Wastes, but is also naturally produced as a byproduct of some dracoforms' breath weapons. A new sage has recently moved into the Sage's Guild, replacing the two previous humans who had run the shop. Gellan, an Elven Bard of minor note, will answer any question for a moderate fee. He can be reached most evenings by simply asking around until shop hours are officially set. Congratulations are in order for Relion Lem, the new High Priest of Set! After his courageous defense of the temple of Set during the Great Pillaging, the Cleric Council confirmed his appointment to the temple unanimously. As well, it is rumored that Filo the Secian, also a courageous defender of his temple during the Pillaging, will be announced High Cleric of Set within the month. Good luck, Filo! Hellos... The FSSC would like to say hello again to the following Spurians, recently come back to the city for a time: Garath the Dragon, Karak the Anthian, Nemisis the Dragon, Leaf the Muatana-Al, Aristobulous the Psycian, Kyra the Leuian, and Marissa the Elf. Welcome back to the Spur! ..and Good-byes. The FSSC is sad to announce the departure of the following Spurians who adventured with us through the years: Lilly the Muatana-Al, Baal the Dragon, Cassandra the Leuian, VonBiere the Human, Jedico the Hithual, and Chandra the Elder. You will all be missed. Come back and visit us soon! =========================================================================== *FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC*FSSC* =========================================================================== Spurian Contest: What Did You Like? by Selder'a Firedrake Seeing as this is my final issue, I thought it would be nice to find out what exactly our readers liked and disliked about Volume 5.
